Job Description

Primary Purpose: 

Young 1ove is committed to ensuring that youth in Botswana are equipped with proven life-saving information. We believe that the ability to count and grasp basic numerical concepts is an essential skillset that has ramifications on health, poverty and well-being. We are looking to engage paid volunteer facilitators to teach basic numeracy skills to school students in Standards 4 & 5 in South East, Kgatleng and Chobe. Facilitators will be trained on the program assessment tools, curriculum, and operations and will implement the program over the course of seven months.

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Facilitators will be responsible for implementing Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) at quality:

  • Attend 10-day training prior to implementation

  • Assess student numeracy skills with TaRL levelling tool at baseline, midline, and endline.

  • Develop detailed daily lesson plans with targeted objectives and activities.

  • Facilitate high-energy 1-hour curriculum on basic numeracy to Standards 4 & 5 students for over the course of 7-9 weeks.

  • Target and advance student learning with learner-centered activities and teaching techniques.

  • Engage in daily and weekly reflections with fellow facilitators and mentors.

Qualifications and Characteristics

  • Youth between age 20 and 35 years with minimum of a Junior Certificate qualification, up to Diploma and Degree qualification.

  • Preferred experience in educational environments facilitating, teaching, lesson planning, tutoring numeracy.

  • Facilitators will be selected from implementing regions. Applicants must have accommodation in the selected school districts.

  • Familiarity and ease working with children.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English and Setswana.

  • Ability to develop strong and cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, local community-based stakeholders and members of the community.

  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to self-development as well as strive to link theory with practice.

  • In accordance with the Young 1ove Child Protection Policy, a police background check is compulsory.
